Pink Kimberley Sourcing and Manufacturing
The Argyle mine ceased operation in 2020, interrupting the supply of pink diamonds globally and creating a demand far surpassing availability. This closure saw prices of pink diamonds increase exponentially, and they continue to do so years on.
Pink Kimberley jewellery designs highlight these precious pink diamonds with distinctive styles, sympathetic to the variety of size, colour and cut of the Argyle mine's pink diamond production. Due to the limited availability of stones many pieces are unique, giving the collection outstanding, unique attributes.
The Argyle Colour Chart
For white diamonds the grading process is fairly rudimentary. However, with pink diamonds there is one measure that is far more important than the others - it is the Colour of the diamond; both the actual colour and its intensity. It's this that determines the value of a pink diamond. The GIA method of grading did not go into enough depth to accurately grade an Argyle pink diamond.
Argyle is the largest producer of pink diamonds in the world, thus an internationally recognised pink colour system and nomenclature was developed in house to consistently grade their rarest pink diamonds. Therefore, the Argyle Pink Diamond Grading System became an internationally recognised grading system just for pink diamonds.
The Hue of a Pink Diamond
The hue of a diamond is a key determinant of value and can be affected by modifying colours or tints. Each stone is graded according to the hue of that individual diamond. E.G. a pink diamond with a pink hue may have a purplish pink tint.
In order of rarity:
RED / PURPLISH RED & BL: Blue Violet
PP: Purplish Pink
P: Pink
PR: Pink Rose
PC: Pink Champagne
Saturation & Tone=Intensity
Each diamond is given a grade for colour intensity on a scale from 1 to 9 with 1 being the most intense colour and 9 being the least.
1=Very intense 2=Intense
3=Strong 4=Medium
5=Medium Light 6=Light
7=Very Light 8=Blush
9=Light Blush
Mineralogy
Pink diamonds are one of the world's most treasured natural resources, but simultaneously one of the least understood. Even as these stones set record per carat prices - as high as 3.6 million AUD per carat in the case of a extremely rare red stone from the Argyle mine in Western Australia - gemologists continue to argue about the specific circumstances that cause a pink diamond to form its signature colour.
Research into how pink diamonds get their signature look is still ongoing, but scientists have some theories as to their origin. A study conducted by the Gemological Institute of America on more than 90,000 pink diamonds found that in more than 99.5% of cases - 199 out of every 200 gems - the colouring of the stone came from a distortion in the crystal structure, as opposed to the inclusion of trace elements. What causes these distortions is still unknown, but some researchers have suggested that the point of origin may have been some kind of intense physical shock, such as the volcanic activity that propelled the diamonds or some unknown event prior to eruption deep in the Earth's mantle.

Just how valuable are they?
Loose pink diamonds are incredibly expensive, starting from up to 1 million for a single carat. This is at least 20 times more costly than a white diamond of the same size. However, there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for this: the Argyle Mine in Western Australia is responsible for producing 90% of the world's pink diamonds. With production coming to a halt in November 2020, there are now only a few pink Argyle diamonds left in circulation. It's for this reason that they make for great investments.
As rare as they are beautiful, the value of a natural pink diamond is also dependent on its shade. Just like any other coloured stone, a more intense colour will signify a higher value.
Why should I buy an Argyle pink diamond?
Changing Economic Landscape
Property, stocks, precious metals and bonds are no longer considered guaranteed investments. Commodities have a negative correlation with respect to the performance of the stock market. Gold and white diamonds lose their value when the stock market rises.
Alternative Hard Asset Investment
Argyle pink diamonds has an impressive record for appreciation over the past 30 years, consistently appreciating 10-15% per year. Within the Argyle mine itself, pink diamonds are incredibly rare, representing less than 1% of the total diamonds mined. Argyle pink diamonds are not influenced by the speculative moods of equity markets, thus are protected from market risks.
Increasing Rarity
Upon closure of the Argyle Mine, the world's only consistent supply of natural pink diamonds will be gone forever. Nothing will replace the Argyle pink diamond. Pending supply shortage with increased demand suggests Argyle pink diamonds to be a top investment.
No Near Future Alternatives
It would take at least another 15 years for a new mining operation to proceed if another consistent source of natural pink diamonds was discovered. Longer term, these rare pink diamonds are a scarce finite resource with no new sources of supply for the foreseeable future.
